Default First time on Taylorsville 5-3-16

So all of the places here where I crappie fish are muddied up from the past few rains. Dad and I really wanted to go fishing but not waste our time. So after much debate and talking ourselves into it, we decided to finally give in to our friend and make the two hour trip to Taylorsville. And boy are we glad we did! We were very hesitant with the 15 fish limit. Thinking that the limit was so small because there weren't many fish. But we were definitely wrong!
We left the house at 430 am and after stopping at the local gas station by the lake and getting bacon sandwiches that we were told were amazing!(which is the case) We put the boat in the water shortly after daylight and after studying my echomap on the Garmin we took off to an area our friend told us to fish.
We set up to spider rig. And as we were rigging up the second pole, BAM rod tip buried fish on! It was a very nice almost 14 inch crappie! So after putting her in the live well we got all of our poles rigged before putting them out. And the action was great all day!
We caught fish as deep as 20+ feet and as shallow as 3 feet! They were semi scattered but very easily fishable.
We caught them mainly on minnow spider rigs. But we also caught several by casting jigs or minnows up towards to the bank near brush. The jig of choice for us appeared to be the Bobby Garland baby shad in monkey milk color. They weren't very picky at all on minnow size.
we had our limit by 11 but didn't want to stop fishing. So we culled until we decided to go in around 230.
We caught every bit of 70+ fish. Of all different sizes. Caught at least 50 legal fish. And the ones we caught that weren't 9 inches were mostly just barely under 9. We ended up throwing a lot of the pregnant females we caught back. Out of the 30 we kept, maybe 10 of them were females if that.
Most of the fish we cleaned were 10 inches or above. Our biggest was close to 15 inches. Had another as I said earlier just a shade under 14. And a couple right at 13.
Overall from what I have gathered, Taylorsville is an amazing lake. Reminds me of a mini Lake Cumberland. And as long as the state keeps the 9 inch minimum and 15 fish rule, this lake will be full of giant crappie in the upcoming years! And boy I can't wait!
Was planning on going to one of our local lakes this Friday, but we are definitely heading back to Taylorsville. We will probably experiment with different techniques this time. We didn't experiment much yesterday because there wasn't a need to. Don't fix something if it doesn't need fixed is my belief lol.

Congrats on your catch. Tville can be a blast to fish sometimes, other time it makes you wanna bang your head on a brick wall. But I guess those tough days are what keeps us goin back. Good luck in the future. You see a white and blue bay boat come say hi.

Ha ha....thats for darn sure. Thats what will happen too . People will go out and find it hard fishing and the word will go out that
the spawns over. The parking lot at Settlers Trace will turn to pleasure boaters and bass fisherman and people will think the crappie fishing ended.
Ive seen it before, yet the people who work for fish and seek them out ,will come in with crappie. I am glad for me the lake is
only 1/2 hour though....a two hour drive is a long way to come.

Yeah the two hour drive sucks. But it's worth it just for the beautiful view. The lake is gorgeous. Not to mention, I'm big on catfishing. And from what I saw and have been told is that catfishing Tville is a blast as well. I saw several big fish on my graph when I was in deeper water. It has a great shad population which definitely helps the crappie and cat populations.... I see myself fishing the lake a lot in the future for both species. Even heard from a friend that skipjack time to gather thick at the spillway which also gets me excited lol

Be careful netting fish down at the spillway ... unless you intend to "cut" them. Asian Carp have made it all the way up the Salt River to the spillway ... and I wouldn't want you to accidentally set one of them loose in the lake.

Actually, if you're going to cast net for bait ... I'd do it up in the lake !! There's always plenty of schools of Gizzard Shad up there, from <2" to >6" long. And that's what the majority of Taylorsville's fish feed on, especially the Channel & Blue cats.

And if for some reason you can't find the Shad schooled up shallow enough to net them ... just take a 1/16oz marabou Roadrunner and cast along the rocky banks. You'll catch the heck out of Green Sunfish, and can use them for bait !!

If I go below the spillway it'll be for skipjack only. And u need a rod with small jigs or spoons to catch them. And I can easily tel the difference between them and Asian carp. And they will almost always be dead and cut before I'd use them anyways. But I definitely understand the Asian carp worry. I work on a towboat and deal with them jumping on our barges daily. And I've seen they fingerlings. And can even tell them apart from a shad
