Default Side imaging on trolling motor

I verticle jig fish and move spot to spot fishing stakebeds and brushpiles. Anyone using a Humminbird Helix (side image ) with transducer on trolling motor ? Use a hand held gps most of the time but they can be off sometimes . The side image would help locate missed piles without doing circles over the area .

I spider rig in a very similar manner (waypoint to waypoint) ...

I use the Combo view SI/Chart as I'm approaching my waypoint ... When the Chart shows I'm very close to the waypoint - I switch views to Sonar/Chart to allow the smaller 2d cone shape sound pulse show me if my structure is indeed under my xducer ...

If my Chart shows I have passed that waypoint ...and I didn't see that structure on my 2d image = I know I missed the structure by a few feet left or right ...

Then I immediately switch back to SI/Chart for the SI to show me which side of the boat I missed the structure ...

Now I have definitively located the structure ...I re-adjust the boat and fish the structure ...sometimes hovering over the structure for 10-15 seconds - sometimes 10-15 minutes depending on the fish activity ...

When I feel the fish in that particular piece of structure have quit = I start moving toward my next waypoint ...watching the SI/Chart view so that the Chart can guide me to my next destination // while the SI shows possible new structure (that I place a waypoint on) on the way to the next planned waypoint ...

    And repeat procedure ...

(My OCD needs procedure ... )

CA, I use a HB999 on my bow with the transducer mounted on the trolling motor. I put the transducer in a transducer shield and I can not use the SI. DI and sonar work fine. On mine, the left side SI is black. Who knows.

Rickie, I have the 859 di on front of the boat when fishing fairly deep water (14 ft ) it seems when I go over we it could be over to one side of boat quite a bit ( I understand why because of cone angle the deeper the water the more out it could be) this is beginning to bother me so i have been thinking about adding a smaller si unit what's your opinion on this? If it's a dumb idea or over kill just tell me you know I'm a big boy.

It's not uncommon to miss the structure when returning to a waypoint ... This is simply because our grade of GPS in these Sonar units only have an accuracy of 8-10ft 95% of the time (I think that's actually the HB spec documented) ...

The SI can help determine which side of the boat the structure is actually on if the structure was missed by the other Sonar technology being used (2d or DI) while approaching the waypoint on the Chart view ...

Then one can re-adjust the waypoint on the Chart view ... Or simply throw a buoy out to get "on top of" the structure ...

    Something is amiss here ...

The Transducer Shield and Saver mounts are designed to not possibly block any of the Sonar beams ...

There is a xducer problem or unit problem if your SI is black on one side ...

Go some place you can compare the 2 side by side. Think you would really be happier with the 7 especially if you run it like Rickie on split screen.

    Nimrod,

I have a 999 CI HD SI unit on my crappie magnum with an HD SI transducer mounted on my terrova 55# unit in that boat, I use the unit like Rickie described above when trolling and also when vertical jigging deep (16 to 25 foot of water) to help me circle the structure I am trying to stay on. It works great. I have Helix 10 SI units on my H20PFC at the Dash and the Bow, I am still working on getting an SI transducer mounted on the TM in this boat, I am actually going back to a Terrova from the Ulterra just so I can mount the SI transducer and not have to worry about cable routing issues or snags of the cable. Once I have the Terrova and SI transducer mounted, I am confident I will like it much better due to the better screen resolution of the Helix 10 units over my 999. The way I have it setup now using the US2 transducer in the Ulterra is slower and takes longer for me to acquire the stump/tree or brush pile since I use the Dash mounted units gps and SI transducer to get close, then use the US2 on the bow unit to refine and put me right on the cover to jig. Cant wait to get the SI issue resolved for the TM, I am expecting the new Terrova, ethernet switch, and cables tomorrow from Brian at BBG Marine Electronics. Once I have everything solved, I will send you a PM and maybe we can get together and jig fish somewhere so you can see if this setup is what you really want.
