    Default Kayak Storage Rack

Throwing this out there in case anyone is considering doing something similar.

I decided to make a rack to store our kayaks in the garage that would free up enough space to also get a car in the garage.

I used some scrap lumber I had laying around, plus a couple of PVC tubes that rods had shipped in. I did have to buy a little bit of 1x4 lumber, but you could substitute almost any type of lumber.

This is what I ended up with. It's sized to be wide enough to fit my wife's Tupelo underneath, and the right height to slide my Tripper 12 directly into the truck bed.

The Tripper 12 has two "channels" on the bottom of the hull, I attached a couple of old PVC rod shipping tubes at the right spacing to ride in these channels on the hull.

I used a 1 1/2 inch hole saw to drill holes in the PVC, then a smaller hole and lag bolts with washers to fasten them to the rack.

This is my wife's Tupelo 12.5 slid into the rack on the C-TUG cart.

The rack is 6 feet long, so the kayaks overhang both ends.

This is the Tripper 12 going from the pickup onto the rack, these should save me some back pain.

Tripper 12 sliding onto the PVC rails.

    Here's a view from underneath.

And the rack with both kayaks loaded.

I think I found the perfect crate to use with my orange Jackson Kayak.

Looks nice! Thumbs up on not having to lift the yak into the truck, that can get old especially if the yak is loaded at all.

You probably already know this but most kayaks are not recommended to sit flat on the ground when not in use for any long duration. Several makers speak of them flattening out the bottom of the yak even though they may eventually return to their original shape. Most kayaks are recommended to store either on their sides or standing vertical. Hobie Pro Anglers are the only ones that I'm aware of that suggest they rest flat on 2.5"-3" PVC like you have done. You should be fine because your PVC is supporting in the right areas. Great job.

Your stand is awesome, now if we can only get someone at the lake to lift our heavy coolers that are full of fish and load them into the truck...

Yeah, I need to figure out an easier way to get it back in the truck at the boat ramp.

Like your way of thinking. I would finish it out with some pool noodle on that pvc pipe and wheels on the stand to roll it out of the garage to the back of the truck.
    I like your idea.

I can back right up to it in the garage. I built it in the driveway and took the pics out there to have better light. The pool noodle would defeat the purpose, at least part of it. I can slide the kayak right onto the pic pipe without having to lift it. I doubt there would be any wear between the pic pipe and the kayak anyway.

Momma is happy, this cleared up almost three feet of space in the garage. She doesn't have to squeeze her car in any more. If momma is happy, everybody is happy.
