Default Fish showing on fish finder - your thoughts

I went out from Tommy's Landing today for about an hour after the rain passed through. Water appeared to be high and the current strong. I went to the far side of the 43 bridge ( almost under it) and found a drop off and ledge that dropped to about 25 ft deep. My fish finder showed more fish than I have ever seen displayed before. My question is : do you think that there were really a bunch of fish there about 15 ft down or was that maybe thrash that the current had picked up? PS: did not get a bite.

It was probably fish. If nothing else, then because of where you were at.

I have a lot of confidence in my unit (elite 7 ti with total scan ), but in my opinion, chirp gives me a lot more reassurance that those fish in the screen = fish in the water.

Don't forget to account for the depth your tranducer is in the water.

I was at the rez today roo. As long as I could keep it dead still and within 6" of the same depth, I got bit. Neither were a problem & I ended up keeping 17 nice fish.

Some days that little bit of difference is all it takes.

I usually see lots of fish in channels but can't catch them. I think sometimes they are big shad and rough fish. Catfish show big arches when the boat is moving and crappie show as individual dots stacked vertical in the column when moving. When going really slow, or setting still, all fish stretch out as lines because you repeatedly ping the same fish over and over stretching them out.

Ever notice that when you're idling along you see lots of fish but when you start trolling they seem to disappear? That's because you're covering more fish at a faster speed than you do going slower. When I scan an area, I use my trolling motor and go slow to confirm the concentration of fish I've seen in an area. If they are still thick, I fish them, if not, I MIGHT fish them, but if I don't like the place that much, I MIGHT not.

I refuse to even refer to mine as a "fish finder." I call mine what it is, a depth finder. Now, it is really handy at showing me where fish aren't. It may even show me a fish from time to time, but it is usually in a place that I already expected to find fish. That makes it more of a "fish confirmer" I think........
