Thread: Freshwater Shrimp

If u are talking bout grass shrimp I have always caught them pretty good in the old ditches that consistently hold water and grass. I use an old crabbing net because it is fairly long. Just get near the grass and scrap the bottoms.

I haven't done it in a long time, but used to do the same thing as FishingFool. I bought a long handled dip net with very small holes, went to a ditch that crosses I-220 in Bossier, and caught them there. Another good source, is the bottom of floating water plant roots. Salvina or something similar was floating in a lake and I netted it. Once in the boat, they were jumping all over the place! LOL

I will make one to try to catch a bunch. watching U-tube they were slaying Crappie and Red Ears that are Called Shellcrakers in Florida. I like to have never seen what was in the bucket being put on the hook, they were only about an inch long, with no color. I knew Shrimp Migrated up the rivers at night and their eyes shine and the Boat can get full in a hurry with a fine meash net in a pole

Find a grassy area of water, and work a long handle dip net through it. You can get a net with fine holes in it from somewhere like walmart or Academy.

In the basin I used to see where people cut some small bush limbs and hang them on the surface of the river. They would come back with a dip net under the bush.

Must of been one of that Mays fellers videos. Yep he was using grass shrimp. A 1" crawfish will also work as good or better. And like evrryone has said, dip any ditch or weedy area and should get plenty.

I made bait scoop years ago from 3/8ths rebar frame and covered it with fine mesh hardware cloth. I used a 6ft length of steel conduit for the handle .
Like everyone said scoop a big pile of weeds and moss to find the grass shrimp. I haven't used live bait in years. but it seems like I didn't get many grass shrimp in the ditches where I've fished. ( but I was usually after crawfish )
