Thread: newbie and very confused

I'm not a caster, but many whom fish stumphole are. Most use a cork and jig though. The fishing has been very good in stumphole for the second straight year. The crappie bite started very eary this year with the extremely warm tempatures, and is waning here of late. The ShellCracker should be going strong for the next few weeks. ShellCracker bite jigs very well, and I'll be targeting them in the grass, along with brush pile crappie when I get back on the water soon.

Dont feel bad i fully anticipate frustrating days with no fish after i move to sc in july. I will be right there with you. I felt the same way in 2013 when i bought my boat and only fishing three weeks a year. After three vacationsi in mn, i am very confident i can catch walleyes every outing, already caught two trophy sized also, althiugh i cant fish much, the other 11 months a year are spent researching every aspects of my setups, talking to experienced anglers on forums, researching the species im targeting and what makes them tick, and enviromental factors that affect the fish. This allows me to be aware of it when im fishing and make some crucial observations if i catch them as to why i did. I fully anticipate challenges changing species i am targeting and regions within the united states. I struggled also in alaska for silver salmon. I am confident in saying the guys on this forum can help you catch crappie and are much more helpful then any fisherman ive encountered.

Welcome aboard. He must have been using a Road Runner head with a Slider body. Most of us will use a 1/16 or a 1/32 oz head. This kind of fishing is done by casting out the jig and counting down before retrieving. By using a count down you are letting the jig sink to a depth to find what depth the fish are biting/holding. I tend to start on a 4 count on a 1/32 and a 2 count on a 1/16 if fishing woody cover/brush pile. If you don't get a hit add 2 more count as in 6 & 4 to the starting count. Do this until you find the right depth. Once you find the right depth you should be able to use that count for a few hours and stay on the fish.

It was not a road runner but that is what ill try I have a few and have caught a few fish in pond near my home with them. Thanks for reply what about weedless jig head for slider grub seems like that would work.

What he was using was a larger spinner rig with a beetle spin head and body attached to it and probably the crawfish body color. In another words use the regular beetle spin jig and body but a larger spinner. If fish are deep you can add a split shot to the vertical arm to make it fall faster. Have used this rig in Santee and rivers with excellent results.
