shoot.....! forgot to take a pic but scouted the boat ramp for florence canal...gravel on the side of the road with no parking lot...one vehicle was there and was just parked on the side of the road....it is 4 miles or so to the intercoastal and then cross the IC to get to the permitted canals....I will have 12 gallons of gas and 40 hp motor...4 stroke......any body know how many miles that'll get me....carrying two men and tackle......weighing 350 + tackle......

I really cant guess how much gas ya need I usta could go a very far way on a tank when I had a 40. There are 2 oil facilities down the florence or ratter were a few years ago. One half way down on the left side and one almost to the lake in a canal on the right. There was a couple gauging boats that ran the canal so ya wont be totally alone. Bring a spare 5 gallon tank and watch your main tank when it is half empty see how far ya got thats the safety limit for the spare 5 gallons to get ya with in a mile of the landing or trolling motor safe range.Thats how close ya need to be when ya run out of gass. If ya have a vhf radio I seem to remember the local guys use channel 6 or maybe 8 I'll go back to one of my journals and check on that for ya if ya have a radio

The kid down the street says he gets about 3 hours on step on a 12 gallon tank and he makes 30 mph if that helps.

I carry extra gas when I run around the spillway, It's enough to come out on.

I figure the 1/3 rule as in aircraft. 1/3 to get you there, 1/3 while there, and 1/3 back plus 30 minutes.

The four stroke will use lots less gas than a two stroke ......I run a 90 hp and 16 gallons of gas lasts a long time even with a lot of high speed running. I had a 50 hp two stroke at one time that would use the heck out of it.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

I've been back there and am thinking you will have plenty with 12 gallons. You can get a wooden dowel and when you put your boat in the water (not on the trailer) mark it at the full. Later you can see how much you are using and make sure you have enough to come back. Also in an emergency the headquarters would probably give you a couple of gallons. I said that thinking you had one 12 gallon tank, but if you have 2 @ 6 gallons even easier.

Congrats fishervet! I've been back there out of a jon boat for work a few years back. Watch out for submerged logs in the main channel as well as crew boats flying around the bends. If you get to the first facility on the left and go down that canal, there should be a small cut coming from the marsh at the end of the dead-end canal. You may be able to pick up some catfish or something at least.
