If mailbox was closed it is hard to believe it opened it and shut it back on it's own!

What's your opinion! A man that lives on the lake in front of my house went to the mail box yesterday and when he opened it, there was a cotton mouth moccasin inside. He thinks the snake climbed the pole and got inside somehow. I say someone put the snake in there as a message to him or even worse. Was trying to get him bit. I know snakes are really moving around because of all the rain and high water but this had to be done on purpose.I don't know if he called the law or not but if he didn't report this, he needs to get bit!![

Biggest crappie to date is 3 lb 9 oz at grenada in 1988. Still hangs on my wall.
Sounds like a message to me

I have seen them get into some pretty tight spaces don't think he pulled the door closed behind him. Good thing it was as cool as it was today. Last Wednesday he would have got bit. Hope he called police. No body handled that snake as a prank.

When he went to the mail box and opened it he was lucky that the snake was not way back in the box so he saw it immediately.Guess what was in the mailbox with the snake. A Wally World sales flyer!Guess the snake was looking at the ads and was too busy at the time to bite!I'm trying to get a picture from him on e-mail of the snake. He said the snake didn't move and he thought it was dead or not real. He got a stick and touched it and it moved then. I would have had to put on fresh drawers first!!

I am sure the postal service would like to know about this also.
My mailbox is 43 years old and is as tight now as it was when new. It's on a pipe post and some kind of flowering vine on a trellis behind it. I had to spray a wasp nest some 20 years ago.
I replaced a mailbox that was about 25 years old that was in brick. A hole had rusted out at the mounting hole below the flag.
Not to lessen the severity of somebody possibly putting a snake in a mailbox but was the guy 100% sure it was a cottonmouth? To lots of folks any snake is a copperheadedcottonmouthwaterrattlerpython.
I just saw a picture posted on Facebook of a snake that was caught in a sticky trap in a storage room locally. 100% of the folks who had commented said it was a copperhead. I saw it and told my wife no way it was a copperhead and was probably a rat snake. F&W verified it was a rat snake.
A black racer or a chicken snake are climbers and could have very possibly taken up in a mailbox and might have even been in the box when the mail was placed in the box. In cool weather the snake wouldn't be moving very fast and might have gone unnoticed. If it was 100% IDed as a cottonmouth then I would think that guy has somebody who is not looking out for his best interests.
