    Default Calcasieu River

Anyone ever have any luck catching any numbers out of the calcasieu? I live in moss bluff i mostly launch at the 171 launch and fish watermelon bay and other near by bays, usually with shiners been catching a few up at the base of cypress trees. I take my son and we catch usually 2-4 fish but I sure would like to get a nice stringer for him. We also go to bundicks sometime but we never catch anything at all there. We went to the bell city drain ditch last weekend and scratched any advice will be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Ryan. I can't help you with any of those places as I'm too far east of you, but there are some that fish those areas and post about them. I do know on Bundicks you have to fish the deep, check out Shadows and Johnny's post of recent trips there.

First off welcome to the forum. I haven't fished the calcasieu in years but used to catch a few there but it depended HEAVILY on the water conditions. I do fish Bundicks often but it is extremely high right now. If you go to bundicks, make sure you have PLENTY OF JIGS! As bundicks likes to eat them! You can fish off the bank by hopewell bridge or by the spill way or if you go by boat try in the lake north of the spill way in deeper water (16 to 24 foot) but we have been catching them in every depth of water from 7 to 24 so you just have to move around until you find them. I did see a nice catch from Lacassine today, that is another option that is not too far from you. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Welcome to the forum. If you fish Bell City you have to have secrete brush piles. Lacassine has slowed since the rain. The Calcasieu can be tricky to fish. I have caught a lot of fish out of it over the years. I fish Houston, West Fork, Calcasieu, and Bayou Serpant. It can be hit or miss. I finally had them figured out. I was catching every trip good numbers and size. Then the Army Corp of Engineers came in and cleared the storm damage making finding them more difficult. I have never fished the spawn on the river because I fish other places during that time. After the spawn you can catch them off lay downs with grass in deep water. I fish 18in to 24in deep in 20 fow. I fish with jigs and shiners. The fish are there. I have seen guys at the launch with limits of them.

Thanks, Im going to soon add a depth finder to my boat i think that will help alot at bundicks. When fishing jigs do you guys use corks or just drop it down and raise it up right off the side of the boat? Saute are you refering to Indian Bayou as far as the Army taking out all the fallen trees? I've heard thats the place to catch them but i never had any luck. I really wanna learn the calcasieu because I live 2 min from the launch.

They took the trees from every body of water. I use to fish the houston river because it wasnt navigable. Slow speeds and had to pull the boat over trees and through tree tops. I use to fish indian bayou and catch a few but not as good as up the houston past hwy 27

A depth finder is a must to fish bundicks and 2 of them is even better if you can swing it b/c the front of your boat can be in 20 foot of water while the back can be in 7! We typically just tight line jigs without a cork but I would think that you could catch them under a cork during the spawn. I have never fished the spawn at bundicks.
