Marabou
Whats the best marabou to buy for tying crappie jigs? I dont want the big poofy glob like on steelhead jigs, just a small flowing tail with a chenille body. Not sure what to get!! I just make hackle tail jigs.. The only marabou i have worked with is the fluffy stuff at the base of my hackle feathers.

When tying marabou the best way is to tear off the barbules from the stem, stack until you have enough to tie in, pinch it just about where you want to cut it to length, cut and tie in. Never cut off the natural ends of the feather. The very best action comes from tying it like this and really you do not just want to take the while feather and tie that in for a tail. I only use maybe 5 to 10% of the tips of marabou and then only the very thinnest stems as the stem restricts action.
I use Blood Quills for mine. You can use the Extra Select Marabou, but it comes on really long quills, but will work too.

Thank you very much! I knew I could count on you for an answer. I actually saw that pic in the other thread and that reminded me that I wanted to pick up some marabou.

The word marabou refers to the feather from the marabou stork. Some use turkey flats as a substitute. Best marabou for what you are asking for is called blood marabou. This is the shorter feathers that you can pull back and cut one shot, then install into fly or jig. No mess and little throw away.
