What brm said ! Also invest in a compression gauge. A compression check from one cylinder to the next can tell you the health of the motor. When you take the spark plugs out run your finger along the treads. Have seen metal shavings show up on my finger that can't be seen on the plug. Also add the cost of a new impellar for the water pump unless they can show you a reciept in the last year or two.

    Good luck !

25 hp. motors have become rich and rare, apparently, as it's hard to find anything in decent shape for under $1500 it seems. Keep an eye out for two cylinder Suzukis, Nissans, and Tohatsus. All of them are good motors and folks aren't as proud of them. Parts are available for all of them.

All the ones I've checked out so far have ranged from $350 (a 15hp that *needed a little work*) to $800 for an old 25hp. That $800 is certainly the highest I'd want to go, higher really, but if somebody was needing cash and a had newish 25hp up for sale at the ridiculously low price of $1200, I ain't saying I wouldn't buy it.

I have located a 20hp, my brother's, and I'm hoping it works out that I can get it. I know the owner and the motor and the price will be right. But it ain't in stone yet, so I'm still looking.

Thanks Bassing_53, but I'm looking for something with few more ponies in the barn.

I have a 15 for sale and have a couple more I am working on that will be for sale soon. A fellow is supposed to come by and look at the motor tomorrow but ya never know.

I will finish repairing an Evinrude 15 for another fellow tomorrow. Its running good now and I think he intends to sell it after I finish up.
