Overlooked jewel in the Panhandle
Not very well known is a land mitigation preserve in the sand hills of Washington County in the Florida Panhandle. The Fitzhugh Carter Tract wildlife and fishery are managed by FWC under very strict regulations. There is very limited public access to what locals call the sand hill ponds. The Carter Tract has several of these ponds. No personal boats, trailers, or motors allowed except for a yak or canoe which are inspected before being allowed to pass. However, free Jon boats area available that you move under oar or sculling power.
Earlier this week a buddy and I fished one of these ponds and kept the allowed limit of crappie....10 each. You log every fish catch whether you keep it or release.
The preserve is natural in almost every way. There is no stocking of game or fish. Mother nature is in full control.
It was a good day with plenty of action to keep us happy.

Good read, wish more bodies of water were managed in this manner...in regards to no stocking & leaving the lay of the land un-touched...nice mess Fishwalton
