First thing to learn & become quick at doing, is to learn the buttons to push to get the waypoint marked. Whether you stop & fish it is up to you & how much time you have to devote to "checking it out". You can always go back and delete a waypoint over cover that is no longer there.

Check your Fish/Wildlife or DNR websites to see if they have placed cover in the lake & posted the GPS coordinates of those spots. They can be manually entered into your unit, then checked out when on the lake. Just be aware of the fact that these coordinates may not be pinpoint accurate, but within 10-20ft of the coordinates given. Commercial GPS accuracy isn't allowed to be as accurate as Gov/Military GPS. And also be aware of the fact that the coordinates are measured from your antenna, not your tranducer ... as well as the fact that DI images can come from any part of the fan shaped span of your sonar ping, and may not be directly under the boat or transducer, but to either side.

Commercial gps isn't allowed to be as accurate? Not trying to ruffle your feathers, and I could very well be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they're all using the same kind of satellites and technology. That's how surveyors now do their job so accurately. That's how you can pinpoint wreckage and find someone that goes over board. It's all relative to the satellites overhead, but they're pretty dang accurate. And if what you say is true, who made that rule and what does the rule say, you must not be within 5' of your actual location unless you're military? It just doesn't sound true to me.

Try this when you don't have GPS. Use 2 buoys run trolling motor on whatever but same speed. When you go over the structure throw 1 buoy out close to the side of you boat. Then turn around and go back across the structure and do the same thing . The structure will be exactly in between the two buoys. I read this somewhere years ago and it worked for me finding my fish habitats.
Be safe and good luck fishing

Sounds like a good way to get a good idea of where the structure is. I just got the Garmin 73SV with gps during that president's day sale at bps. Don't even have it on yet but I'm really looking forward to using it!

When I get it on, and when I find out what CDC is, I'll do my best. Maybe you can fill me in on the last part. There aren't many reviews of this unit out there. I might have to put the camcorder in a zip lock baggie and take it out.

CDC or C.c are all just short for Crappie.com (Crappie Dot Com)

Just a note, you can not catch fish going 50 mph, you don't need a large boat/motor. Pay attention to posts on here and stay at it, you will catch fish. Just a wealth of info on here.

if you don't think our GPS is accurate than the next time you are in the parking lot at your favorite store check to see were you are located on your Google maps. it will show you the exact space you are parked in.
as for the position of your way point. when you install your sonar you can calibrate the difference in depth and distance from your transducer to the unit. another words, if you have a 40 boat and your transducer is mounted in the back by your motor and your sonar is mounted all the way up front your will be 40 ft off target even if you marked your spot while anchored dead over it. same goes for depth. this is why it is important to calibrate these things to your specific set up.
