Default A Rainy Day Trip to Murray 2/15/16

With the day off of work, I looked at the forecast long and hard before heading out this morning. I was fully expecting to see some snow and ice, but all I saw was rain showers. It sure felt cold enough for the snow and ice. It was 31 when I left the house and 34 when I got home. Those temperatures combined with a breeze that I did not see forecasted made for a cold outing.

The nasty weather didn't slow down the fish near as much as it did the fishermen. I tightlined minnows and jigs up the Little River arm of the lake and only saw 3 other boats all day! It was a nice change of pace.

My first stop was teaming with rock fish. That seems to be the case more times than not. I ended catching 4 keepers before I gave up on the crappie. I did manage to catch a crappie mixed in with them, but it wasn't worth the hassle to try and find a few more.

My next stop proved to be much better in the way of crappie. I ended up finishing out a limit and culling for a while before calling it quits. Didn't have any real big fish today, but they were solid keepers and tasted real nice tonight for supper!

Thank goodness for my Dad, who offered a hand in cleaning them! As cold as I was, and still am, I would have been whittling at those fish for a while.

Straight minnows on gold and red hooks were best today. Fish were caught in 10-15 FOW fishing 6-8 foot down. Water temp was 46.

Oh, I almost forgot, but I even caught a white crappie today. Those are few and far between on Lake Murray.

Wow, way to go Derek ....... You're a better man than me.......I don't know if I could have stuck it out in that weather. That's a nice mess of fish to show for your efforts. Thanks for the report.

Way to go Derek!! Glad you made a change and found them. Those stripers had to be fun on your crappie rods, with what 6lbs? Finally looks like a good weekend coming up. Thanks for the report and pics.

Uncle Remus, I hope you kick the bug before long!! I know it's no fun!!

Come on down and join in the striper catching fun. I see lots of folks pulling planer boards and chasing birds around casting umbrella rigs the size of my daughters crib mobile. And I see a few fish caught....but I'm hear to tell you!!! Your crappie rod, a gold or red crappie hook, and a tuffy will out produce them all! And big ones too!

Just drift around the river channel in Little River from Big Mans on up and your sure to catch them!!
