Keep fishing and looking, at least you are out there. Trolling cranks in the summer is a good way to get a few larger ones. Always nice to be just catching Crappie, whatever the size. Great thread & post!!!!!!!
this is a great post.
lots of good advice on this post .....and yes sometimes there just aint many "slabs" on some water bodies ....
if i am strictly trying to ketch "whales" aka slabs ....
i go to spots that have a tendency to lean towards larger specimens myself
bait size has some play in it sometimes as well .....

About hiring a guide; I disagree. When you would hire a guide you would be looking for a teacher to shorten the learning curve. Were you to just be interested in loading a cooler I might agree with your opinion that it would take the fun out of it. But you want to know how to target a different size of fish. A guide knows the water and the fish better than most and a day with him (or her) is like attending college for a day. Time on the water is the best teacher and your guide has more of that than most in the area. In my opinion it's smart money spent. Hope you find what you need and fill your bag of tricks enough to be confident when you drop the TM and get down to business.....Skeet.
