Default First trip of the year

This afternoon I made a quick trip on the Calcasieu River. I caught 1 black crappie and 2 brim. I caught it in 5 fow at 18in. with a black feather jig. I caught it on an over cast at a lay down. It took the jig 10ft from the tree as soon as it hit the water. I will take luck over skill any day...lol. I tried deep, shallow, cork, no cork, up next to the bank, and on the drop off. I just could not locate them. The water had about 2 ft of visibility at 62 degrees. I ran into "fishing nut" out there and he was bass fishing. He had one in the live well and missed a few. The skeeters got bad an hour before dark. The first thing I did when I got home was put my Thermal cell and a can of deep woods in my boat bag. Tomorrow I am going to Lacassine to see if they are up next to the trees yet. It sure was nice to be back on the water.

It was nice running into you today. I needed a little encouragement to keep try to catch a Crappie. Not sure what I hung into but it was a good fighter, got me wrapped up and broke my 6lb line. It is hard to keep going when I can catch a bass or two for supper. I am sure once I catch my 1st Crappie, I will have the fever to catch more. It's that elusive 1st one that is bothering me. Just don't have the confidence for catching them yet. You are right, those mosquitos got bad real quick, I felt like a blood donor.

Thanks. That was an expensive trip too. Last week I replaced the cranking battery, water separator, tail lights, spare tire, plugs, lower unit oil and ordered a jig tying kit from Basspro. I am ready.

Had 3 nice ones in Lacassine today next to the bank shallow. By this time next week I think it's on.

It was nice talking to you today.. We were talking about Mermentau earlier and there was a post done earlier today on facebook about it, a guy had about a half an ice chest full from there this morning.

Mike, about a week or so ago, someone posted on facebook that they were catching them in 8 inches of water in the Calcasieu east of the Moss Bluff Bridge, black and shartruese jig.. Might be an area you can check out.

Too bad you broke your rod. I ended up with 13 and a bass today. Threw back a bunch of goggle eyes too.
