Hit a stump now my boat won't shift right

Hello,

I want to start by saying I'm not a boating expert, so any help is appreciated.

I had my 1996 Johnson 60 HP & 17" Lowe out last weekend. I was in a stumpy lake, but was in a marked boating lane chugging along slowly when I hit a submerged stump in the middle of the lane. One of my prop blades were bent and hit one of the stabilizer bolts (whale tail?). It was installed like that when I got the boat. Anyway, the tip of the prop sheared off. Before realizing the extent of damage, I restarted the broad and limped back to the boat ramp. No big deal, just a little vibration. However, when I tried to reverse it the first time, it didn't go into reverse right away, clicked several times. After that, to get it to go into reverse, you have to rev up and then it slams into reverse. Forward is fine.

Would sudden stoppage like that really affect the shift rigging or did I really screw up something in the lower unit?

First thing to check is the shift rod. Look around front of lower unit. The rod should be visible in a notch or open space between exhaust housing and lower unit just above mounting bolts for lower unit. Bet you hit that before prop hit stump. Could have bent that rod.

Sounds like your shift rod or your shift cable is out of adjustment. The shift cable is a pretty easy fix, shift rod would be a little more difficult. Also if you have a vibration make sure to fix or replace the prop.

I HIT A STUMP ALSO BUT I WAS DOING 30 MPH AND EVERYTHING IS GONE ,PROP AND ALL GEARS WERE RIPPED OUT OF LOWER UNIT

Take it to a service center and have it checked out asap. What you are describing indicates something has been bent or broke. My guess is the bearing carrier has moved rearward or the shift fork is bent.

If you have boat insurance call your company. I got a brand new lower unit and prop for $250.00! (Deductible ) Installed!!
