Good! Now when you go out, go through your menu and take note of the settings for contrast, sensitivity, etc. Then start playing with them.....bring sensitivity down from 10 to 8 maybe and then go back over some stuff to see the difference. Then do the same run with sensitivity at 12. You will see that you probably had your settings too low and everything but the bottom was being filtered out. That ledge looks like it might be holding fish

*Press Menu one time to open the Sonar Xpress menu ...
*Raise Sensitivity until there is an acceptable amount of clutter on the screen ...
*Back off Sensitivity one notch ...

Remember ...the Sensitivity setting is a filter that also filters out weak returns that you may want to see ...

So a small amount of clutter is less filtering ...and it's not a bad thing ...

Sensitivity is manual only ...on a sliding scale of 1-20 ...

Lower Range is the only "Auto" setting...(which "automatically" adjusts the bottom to stay in the middle of the display when set to "Auto") ...

Is this a DI unit? Your pics are all in 2d sonar. Set your trying turning your sensitivity up a few notches as well as your contrast. I like the imaging I get back with them both set around 12.

HB DI units (and HB SI units) have a Contrast setting in the Enhance menu ...

*Press Menu one time to bring up the Xpress menu ...
    *Cursor down Enhance ...
*Cursor right to activate the Enhance menu which will then be overlayed onto the imaging view ...
*Cursor down in the Enhance overlay to "Contrast" ...

Adjusting Contrast up will "contrast" dark echoes against light echoes and make soft targets (like fish) stand out better in the image ...just realize higher contrast will also make the image more "grainy" ...
