Like Icenitro said I believe it is just more of a reaction bite than anything else. The speed stimulates them to strike at something food related that they are about to miss. I have found when it is slow do something different from the norm. May not work every time but often enough to make it worth while. Your observation that someone was doing something different and willingness to change got you bit.
do you have any pics of the gnat jig you mentioned? Also do you fish it on a dropper loop or tied directly to the main line? Thanks for the help....relatively new to spec fishing.

Donald@CrappieLogic makes and sells them. You can see his ad in the Member Sponsor Classifieds Forum. Here's a pic of some of his work :

I fish mine on a Capps and Coleman type rig I tie up myself. Basically a C&C rig is a 3 way swivel at top with a 4-6 inch dropper off to the side a18-20 inch dropper off the middle with a 1/2 oz weight then a swivel tied to the end. On other side of swivel would be a 8 in dropper for your bottom hook. Use a Gnat on top and Jig on bottom. Or you can use the Gnats on both droppers if you prefer. I rarely fish a Jig on top because I'm fishing so slow most times it is just laying down next to or tangled around your long dropper. With the Gnat the minnow can keep it moving around without much trouble. You can send Donnie a PM at Donnald@crappielogic for a color list and pricing. He does excellent work on them and Jigs.

Meatgetter also sells his version of weightless jigs ( knats) to use minnows with . Jerry calls them Minner Critters and will send out a catalog on request . Thanks everyone for the good information but bottom line let the fish tell ya what they want by changing up till you get them to bite .
