My family has been making this old home remedy for generations. Peg got a sore throat and cold so I have been playing nurse maid. Here is the story, and how I make Mama's Get Well Gumbo.

There is a lot of home remedies that have died off with all the hussle of life today. Had a dear ole lady Mrs. Rousseau lived across the street from us as a kid. We all ran to her at first sign of a sore throat or cold and she had some concoction that she swabbed on the back of your throat and tongue that absolutely killed it overnight if not sooner. I know it had iodine in it but not sure what else. Sure beat penicillin shots in the arse. Just had to sit and not swallow until she said was ok but not to drink or eat for a while. That gumbo sounds great cold or no cold.

You're so right Huntingslabes, we've lost so much in the last couple of generations. My grandmother and my mother had all sorts of home remedies for ailments which have all fallen to the wayside. As a teenager I was sent out into the fields and woods to collect different plants and roots for them to cook up these potions. I still remember some of the plants but not what they were used for.
