Default On the Fence About Trolling Motor Upgrade......

I still have a cable steer Minn Kota on my boat but have been considering upgrading to a Terrova based on posts I have been reading. Looking to get more into long line trolling and it seems that this motor would offer an advantage. But the price tag has kept me wondering if it would be worth it to get rid of a perfectly good motor and spend $1500 for a new one. So, I would appreciate your input on whether the Terrova is a good choice over cable steer for all around fishing such as docks and such in addition to long lining. Thanks in advance.....

I did exactly that and have not regretted it one bit. I fished yesterday with a 5 to 10 MPH wind and it would have been almost impossible without the I-Pilot Terrova. We were fishing schools of perch and it held up in position and maintained our path while we were landing fish, getting un-hung, retying, and answering nature's call after 3 cups of coffee.
It is almost like having a person on board just to keep the boat under control. For what it's worth I got the foot pedal because I had used one for 30 years. Once I used the remote a couple of times, the pedal has not been hooked up in 3 years. (I wear mine on a lanyard around my neck.)
I really like being able to get under my Bimini top if it is raining or scorching hot and still control the motor remotely, or run rods out the back of the boat if I am long lining several rods.
You will never regret it, I surely have not.

By the way, you can get the quick disconnect mounting plate from Minn Kota and swap motors back and forth. Takes bout 10 seconds to remove the motor. (it does have a way to lock it for security purposes)

Would not take 1500.00 for mine if I could not replace with another Ipilot motor.

Would not take anything for mine, also believe you can shop for a better price. You can rig a tiller to it with parts from BP.

Ya can't go wrong with a Terrova, but the Power Drive V2 with either I-Pilot or Auto Pilot would be a little less expensive. Either way, they are the way to go for long line trolling!!

I've enjoyed my Power Drive V2 Auto Pilot.

I would longline without one. I agree on just buying a quick release and swapping if need be. You also can buy the V2 for a cheaper option. I wouldn't buy one without the I pilot though. Terrova is a much beefed motor, seems to react faster/quieter, and definitely is easier to stow/deploy.

The Minn Kota IPilot I had added to my new boat was the best thing I ever got for making fishing easier. I can go to the back of the boat and help my wife or do stuff and I can steer with the wireless remote. It makes trolling easy and it has other nice features too. I shoot docks too and I can't really say it helps with dock shooting but with trolling it is the greatest thing ever. Good luck with your choice, Wes
