Default Kayak Trip Report, Madison County Lake

I fished Madison County Lake today near Gurley, AL. I’ve only fished this lake once before and that was several years ago. I started at daylight single pole jigging marked brush piles with limited success. Best bait was a 1/16oz, white Marabou jig.

After several hours I switched over to spider rigging. Fish were still few and far between but a picked up a few. Bests bait was a 1/16oz jig head with a Chartreuse Bobby Garland. Fish were eight to ten feet deep in 10 to 12 feet of water. I think I would have been more successful with a little less wind and if I’d started with spider rigging earlier. I kept ten, returned about the same number of short fish back.

Water was very clear with visibility about three feet and 54 degrees at daylight.

Nice lake and seems to be managed well. I have long lined a couple of times in it with about the same results as you. I was tipped off that when it gets real cold the drain pipe up at the dam the fish hang about 15 ft on the side that would be between the dam and the drain.

I heard the same, but that area had very few suspended fish and I caught no Crappie around the dam. All of my fish came from the shallow end of the lake.

Those are some great fish in that lake, very clean and good to eat. I've had days loading up long lining in there during the spring. Catch a lot of bream and shellcrackers in there when long lining. Should have gone over and tried the trout DB, it's a lot of fun too.

I'm thinking of fishing Madison County Lake again Saturday, maybe take the knowledge from last weekend and built on it.

If the wind is forecast to be 10 MPH or higher I'll have to look for somewhere else to fish though.
