I have seen a rather large slab around 14 inches with a yellow bass in its stomach that was about 6 inches long .
and I have managed a many a crappie that were 3 inches long that took baits that were almost the same size .
I am always amazed at this to some degree but all that said they are about like a largemouth at times on size selections for food .
i typically don't throw much at em that's larger than about 3 inches but i know they will eat bigger items

I have caught plenty of crappie on 1/4 oz jigs! Is what I use in summer! Have also used 1/8 in Spring when they are coming in or leaving shallow water and usually in 10-12 foot water. I have done this when the wind is blowing and having trouble with light jigs. I can pull slow right next to me in the boat!

I have some of the BIGHEAD jigs in 1/4 oz. I have not caught a fish on them yet. I admit I need to try them more than I do,I just do not have the confidence in them to leave them tied on long.Still have it in my mind they have a narrow window of place and time to work. Sure thought they were going to be the ticket for deep water work, maybe I will eventually figure them out...seem idiot proof....but then again we are talking about me here.

Yes it's pretty amazing how big a bait a crappie will eat....I remember catching a 10 "er that had a 2 1/4" Big O sideways in its mouth! Wish I had a picture.....

    as for title

i dont know where the pics, or post, are. but, several years ago i caught crappie(threw the ice mind you) that had 1-1/2" - 2" gills in them. those crappie were only 11"- 12"ers too. i would think a large crappie, of 14" or more, could do much bigger. i also caught one that was real skinny. when i cut it open it had a bass worm about 8" in it. must have been starving to death with a full belly? also, we had regularly "rip them off" our trolled 8" musky lures!
