    Default Questions on a 698ciHD

First, I was planning on getting a helix 7...But Academy had a closeout on the 698 for 399.00 I figured if I keep si scan down to 50-55 ft I can get by so I got one,

Lets just skip the poor DI and Si images for now I'm hoping that is just settings and or transducer tweaking....

But what I cannot live with is the GPS speed jumping all over the place at trolling speed..

I did update the unit no change on erratic speed, curiously enough the speed seems to be more stable if I am viewing 2d, If I switch to mapping or split screen of any sort the speed is constant up and down.. this did not happen at all with my old 768

Anyone know if I can use a external puck with the 698? or any other suggestions?

Unfortunately the 698 is not compatible with any external GPS antenna ...

It seems the smaller GPS units are more often affected by this issue ...

This may indicate that the unit just does not have the processing power to do everything it is selected to do ...

Take the map card out and test your speed issue to see if "processing less" helps at all ...

I know this is not how you would want to operate the unit continuously ... but it may help us determine if the issue is lack of processing power or something else we could track down ...

Thanks for the reply... It did it the first time I took it out on the lake to test, I didn't have my card with me on that trip I accidentally left it in my old unit, But that's what caused me to go ahead and perform the update..hoping it would make it better..one thing I neglected to mention, running at speed say 40mph the speed stays steady.

I think I read somewhere else about turning off 83khz to increase processing speed, it was concerning a different issue and on a different HB unit but I wonder if that would maybe help if even possible to do on the 698.

Anything you can turn off will help the unit perform better ...especially in these smaller processor units ...

Go thru the NAV and Chart tabs and turn off everything you wouldn't need ...

In theory ...turning off the 83kHz should allow more processing for GPS and map related functions ...(I have no documented data this is the case tho) ...

It still wouldn't hurt to call HB and discuss this (and explain everything you've tried) ...

Thanks... I'll give HB a call, in my mind you shouldn't have to turn off features to make other features work like they are supposed to...You may be right in suggesting that will help, but HB sure as heck does not say performance is limited so keep everything not needed off..

If that in fact turns out to be the case I thinks this one is going back....
