    Default Ft. Cobb

There never seems to be any news about Ft. Cobb crappie, so here it is. Went out for about 3 1/2 hours today, fishing from shore, off the rocks. At first, it was all small largemouths (about a dozen), then small sandies (about 10), then 32 crappie. 1/16 oz. jigs with salt and pepper and monkey milk worked well, but only by retrieving very slowly and ticking the rocks. Most of the fish were in the 10-10.5 range, but 3 were in the 12-12.5 range.
Met a couple of nice guys named Randy and Dave. We might have enjoyed the fellowship (aka BSing) even more than the fishing.

Thanks for the post Bigsky I have heard guys talk about catching good crappie there in the winter. I have bass fished Fort Cobb several times and like the lake. I keep telling myself I'm going to crappie fish it some day but just can't seem to get it done. Maybe I can this year. Sometimes the fishing trip is better because of the people you meet along the way.

We used to get some consistent reports from rigrunner(236) and his Southern Woman. They had a lake house there and may have sold it. Haven't heard from them in a couple of years. Hope they are still okay.

Hmm, I had forgotten them too. I bet they did sell their place.

Fished with Ken H. Cold front coming and barometer dropping. Ken got a couple of really nice slabs and a few 10-10 1/2 inchers on a beavertall by Beaver Bottoms. He gave me a jig, and it got me four good thumps, but no fish (old man reflexes, or more likely some excuse that I can't think of right now). Really enjoyed fishing and visiting with Ken.

There were eleven of us at Cobb today. Pretty slow. No big fish. Everyone caught at least a few small ones, and there was an occasional keeper crappie, hybrid, sandie, or bluegill.

About thirty people at the dock the other night. Nobody slamming 'em. Mostly zero to 5 fish. Spoons and plastic caught most of the fish. I got a 13 as soon as the hair jig hit the bottom on the first drop. Thought it was going to be a good night. WRONG. Finished with two fish and three misses in 1 1/2 hours. Got the one hit on the jig and four hits on a black/orange spoon.

Yes. Ice spoon. Went again tonight. Probably 30 people again. Most people caught fish, mainly on lighter colored jigs. Minnow guys and some of the jig guys got zero. I got 15, with 6 at 13"s, one black crappie. Son-in-law only got 2, but one was 14"s. Blue/red and blue/white hair jigs worked, as well as BG ice out. Fun with two grand kids and a couple of kids who were there with their dad.

Never been to Ft Cobb. Always had this vision of a red mudhole in the middle of nowhere, no tree's, just a water hole. Boy was I surprised. Drove out there Sunday just because I didn't have anything else better to do and wanted to check out the WMA for some Hog hunting. Hour and fifteen from the house, going to have to get over there and do some fishing I guess. I grew up on Grand Lake and the water at Ft.Cobb was everybit as clear as Grand, at least the day I was there. I never could figure out how to get to the marina. I drove across the Dam and worked my way around the west and north side and then it started getting late so I just headed back home. Gives me an excuse to go back.
