Default Lake Higgins Report: Round Two

Fished Lake Higgins last week and caught a lot of small fish. Decided to try again yesterday and caught 105 crappie and a 4 lb 2 oz largemouth. Long line trolling with jigs. It took all of my 62 years of fishing experience to keep the largemouth from tangling all the lines. I fish by myself and pull six lines. The crappie were again mostly small but I did manage to catch a couple of 12 inch fish that weighed 3/4 lb. Kept six for dinner. Water temp 59 but warmed to 63 in the afternoon. I bought a counter earlier this year and this was the first time to break the 100 mark.

Started the day experimenting with larger jigs to see if I could get any bigger fish to bite. Pulled 3 rods with larger and 3 with regular size jigs. Never got a bite on the larger jigs while catching many on the regular size. Good day on the water.

That sounds like a great trip to me.Nice pics of black and white crappie together ,,thanks for the report and pictures. The lake I crappie fish has more of a smallish size to them with a few nice one in the mix and I to,did the same experiment you did with the larger baits, same color pattern just a larger size and it turned out like yours did,,,no fish on the larger jigs..

I fish Higgins every now and then myself. Nice catch and report. Have had a few of those large mouths give me a fit also. Even caught a 17" Rainbow trout a few years ago (in March) someone apparently released in the main lake from the trout pond.

    Chuck,

I think I used to see you on Lake Townsend back around 2000 when we were trolling for Hybrids. I believe you had a Trophy boat at that time. Good to hear from you.
