Any down easters wanna guess where I went today?? Trolled firetiger cranknaits for a while, then tightlined 2" Gulp firetiger minnows. Threw back probably 20 little perch and 4 or 5 small pickerel. If you don't know how to clean a pickerel you should definitely learn. They are very fine table fare. Capt Butch Foster has a tutorial uploaded on YouTube that'll show you how to go about it. Still takes a lot of practice though. Happy Halloween! 🎃🎃🎃

Added the word report to the title. Fellows please try to remember to do this, it helps me keep track for the BG contest. And all fish count, not just crappie. Very nice catch and pix.

How fast do you troll when you are targeting the pickerel ?Do they strike hard?? I stay about an hour to a small lake in hartsville sc called press wood lake.A guy told me it had a good many jack fish as he calls em (pickerel) ?? in it and some folks targeted them just like bass fishing, just use something in a chrome color...Thanks for posting the trip and pictures.
HEY,,WATCH THAT YELLOW ROD
For the perch I troll about 2 - 3 mph. Just fast enough to get those crankbaits down to where the fish are. For the pickerel I really don't think it matters. They are everywhere in the water column. (a little high if anything) My guess is that any speed fast enough so that they don't get a good look at the baits will work. They are voracious feeders and will bite anything that moves. I've actually had them follow baits right to the boat when casting and did the figure 8 trick that musky fishermen do and they will eventually strike it. As far as color, just match the forage. The lake I was in has mainly yellow perch for forage, so fire tiger or something with stripes works well. I think that all pike family members like fire tiger no matter what the forage though. And they don't strike especially hard, but once they know they're hooked it's on. They jump and everything. And when they get to the boat they will circle for what seems like forever. They don't get tired. Thanks for commenting and good luck.
