As far back as I remember refinishing cast iron it was placed in a bed of coals, not fire and filled with coals. Let sit for a few hours, removed and scrubbed with steel wool. Washed, rinsed and seasoned with cooking oil.
Every carport sale I go to cast iron is the first thing I look for, if I need it or not. Goodwill use to be a good place to find it, now over priced.
Every trip to Chattanooga we stop at the Lodge plant and check out the back room.

You can find some good deals in the back room of the Lodge Outlet. They have relocated the store about 6 months ago. It's still in South Pittsburgh but they have moved a few streets over.

For anyone looking to strip one, look at the link posted above from cast iron collector. There is a section on Electrolysis.....when I used to restore cars I used this technique on iron all the time and it is unreal how good it works and how easy it is.

Yep, I've looked at the etank setup. If I keep collecting and trading, I'm probably going to set one up. My lye bath is working okay, but I've got a couple pieces that need to go in and won't fit, plus I keep finding more stuff I want.

I have an old one that a buddy had found will hunting. It was covered in thick rust. Took a grinder with a wire wheel to it. Smoothed it out with a light grit sand paper and seasoned it a couple of times. That has turned out to be the best one I have. Just an old no name skillet but it sure does a fine job.

I have some Griswolds in great shape from my grandmother. Pretty much all she cooked with unless it required a pot or pan in the oven. Even then she used her Griswold biscuit pan. I didn't get that one.

Ive actually stopped cooking steaks on the grill and am strictly a cast iron steak guy now. S&P, olive oil, and crushed garlic, sear the heck out of it on both sides and pop in oven for a few minutes depending on thickness of steak. I'm a rare+ guy

Pecan sticky rolls in my 12" Lodge today. Came out slick as a whistle, completely non stick.
