I fish with a 10 foot bucks graphite jig rod (one at a time) and let out 9 feet of line. Ninety per cent of the time I never feel the bite I see it when the fish takes the bait on the fall. Sometimes it gets down only a couple of feet, sometimes it gets down 9 feet and then you get to feel the thump or a tap tap when they hit it. The trick to fishing the little grey ghost is watch the line like a hawk. I don't hunt fish on the fish finder , I hunt for structure that will hold fish. I also put out lots of willow tops so I will know where to fish. I have fished Black Lake just about my whole life so I know a few places on it to fish (I am 69). So if you ever fish the grey ghost (best jig ever in my opinion) watch the line like a hawk, if it goes the least bit slack set the hook (you might catch a leaf, shad, or lily pad) but most times it is a crappie. Good luck.
Would you be willing to give some advice on sinking tops? I finally caught a few Saturday on a top I sunk last year, so the fire has been reignited...specifically what technique and materials do you use? Thanks

J_Row. you are killing me with these great pictures. One of these days I may have to drive down and let you give me a personal lesson. Never been to Black Lake although used to work with a guy who had a camp there. He was always talking about all the fish they caught.

I live on Millcreek in Bienville parish that is 33 feet in some places. This is the way I put out tops in it in about 19 feet of water. Name: 0004.jpg

On Black Lake I don't put them in the buckets, I just put a weight at the top and bottom of the willow and sink them flat as the water isn't deep enough to stand them up. Some times I lay bamboo flat instead of willow. Hope this helps.
