Thread: Never too Late….Henderson Old School

Took a few attempts but got my 89 year old father in law back on the water. Wanted to show him some of Henderson that he'd never seen so we made the run up to Fuselier, north of Bijeaux. While the scenery was great, he let me know that the few sac a lait we were catching there was not enough to keep his interest. Next stop was near the Dupuis pits where I new a few easy bites would be had. Plenty of small fish kept us busy, keeping me in his good graces…We made a small move down the canal hitting 3 of the small lay downs there and as it worked out he tied into a solid 14 inch sac a lait. That one fish made both of our day. "I thought I was stuck on a log" and bent in half fly rod got me scrambling for the net. This one did not get away. Only kept 15 sac a lait but this trip is going to be one of those memory makers…Here is a picture of the BOSS…good fishing all…BC

now that's great he is still fishing I hope i have that long to fish under my belt

Kudos to you BC for getting the Boss back on the water. I tried so hard to do the same with my FIL. He was an avid fisherman for all of his life. He was a bass fisherman when bass fishing wasn't cool. This was way before catch and release and limits. I can remember seeing him with a cooler of 2 to 5 pound bass that was caught in a morning trip and after lunch went back and repeated the feat. I was only dating Linda back then. Later I paddled him around many a trip because trolling motors were unheard of in our neck of the woods. I used a small sculling paddle and sat on the bow of the aluminum flat moving us steadily down the canals. Towards his later years, especially the last two, he couldn't sit long enough to fish from a boat or take the boat ride. I just wished that there would have been a place I could have just launched the boat and then use the trolling motor for an hour or so. But it wasn't to be. I can still hear those stories he told over and over like older people do and I do miss him a lot. Be kind to older people for if you live long enough you'll be one yourself. I think I just about there.

That is a great pleasure to have the teachers come along for an unforgetable trip like that. My Dad is 88 now and on oxygen 24/7 and loved to go in the boat as long as he was able, but now needs a walker or wheelchair to get around. He would go with me to bream fish even in the hottest summer heat just for the company if he wasn't able to fish. Of all the fish that swim, the only kind he wants is bream!!! Enjoy every minute with the "OLD FOLKS" they have some fabulous stories to share! (although you may hear the same ones a few times on the trip) lol My Dad and Mom taught me and now all I have left is Dad, so take them as long as they are able to go and enjoy! ~~ <*{{{{<<
