Lake Washington anglers want partial yo-yo ban

I found this article in The Clarion Ledger. Larry Pugh, a former fish biologist now apparently the director, has an interesting perspective on the crappie population on Washington (I have met Larry at several scientific meetings). I am familiar with the techniques that they are using to model the crappie population. It is the same techniques that we use in AR. If he says that the models show no improvement to the crappie population with a 12" MLL, then this type of regulation could be counter productive. I'm not trying to stir the pot. I'm just providing a little more information (no dog in this fight). I tried to find a data report to look over online, but couldn't find one. I am particularly interested in the request to seasonally ban Yo-Yos and if this will be approved. This issue reminds me of some other lake...

The yo-yo's haven't been an issue the last three years. There isn't nearly as many as previous years and the majority have started catfishing with them. If they would raise the lake level about 16 inches, it would open up a whole new spawning area for the fish that is too thick for fisherman to get a boat in. Just my .02¢

Also, noone has hurt the crappie population more than the spider riggers that hammer them prespawn and most of the summer. Limit folks to two poles per person and you'll achieve what you are trying to do with this petition.

Be careful what you ask for , They raised Nimrods Lake level (normal in spring not counting floods ). Folks just kew it would help putting water deeper in Button Willows , Willow Trees and Ironwoods in spring . Only thing I see is less bank cover and bare red clay banks when water is pulled down 3 ' to fall levels . Too much water can hurt the bank cover sometimes .

Years ago Nimrods shallow areas were full of live cover which fish used to spawn . Now it is turning into a bare mud bowl with mostly bare banks . But the floods most springs is the only thing that keeps it good .

Your post made more sense than anything I've seen posted in awhile! I would sign a petition for a 2 pole limit and leave the limit at 30. I got into the spider rigging and crankbait dragging a few years back. I quit when I was at Grand Lake and seen the number of spider riggers and floating yoyos out in front of the spawning areas in early March. The big fat healthy females never had a chance to reproduce. I couldn't believe how many spider riggers were on Lake Washington during a week day. And this goes on year round. I've seen it said here that a limit is a limit no matter how it's caught. But these limits would not be caught without a dozen or more poles hanging from the boat. We are suppose to be managing our resources but in my opinion this has got out of hand.

I don't post much anymore because it's about showing a tailgate full of slab crappie that you caught with 16 poles double rigged with jigs and a pound of minners.
