    Default Advice on SI/DI/GPS electronics

I am fairly new to the world of electronic fishing and I need some advice. Please keep in mind that I am a simpleton and technologically challenged, but Iam lookng for suggestions on fish finders with above mentioned features that are fairly easy to operate and install. I am retired and I want to increase my crappie catching effectiveness. Any advice would be apprceiated.

I don't think there is a bad unit made, Humminbird, Lowrance, Garmin and Raymarine all make good units. You need to set your budget and go somewhere and push buttons on the units in your price range. What works best for me might be totally opposite of your needs. Any specific questions on a brand or unit I'm sure someone here can help.

I like the Lowerance and Eagle units.I dont seem to get a very long life out of the H B units, but that is just my luck. Im using a 480 fishmark now but it is outdated and it works for the type fishing I do. Im sure most of them nowdays are pretty good units.

If you know somebody who has them already, you can't go wrong by going with the same units since you'll have help available. Otherwise there are really no bad units.

2d will give "cartoon like" images of stuff under the boat ...

DI will give "picture like" images of stuff under the boat ...and out to the sides a few feet ...

SI will give "picture like" images of stuff under the boat, out to the sides 100+ feet, and which side of the boat ...

Price goes up with each added technology above, goes up with each added feature, and goes up as the screen gets larger ...

Do you have a budget ...??

Then we can talk options in your price range ...

I would lile to keep it under $1000.00, preferably 600-800. Ease of operation is a key factor.

Humminbird is the easiest to use and most budget friendly. I would look at the Helix units they are a lot of bang for your buck. The Helix 7 units produce beautiful pics.

I'm stepping into SI with a Helix 7, they're supposed to be user friendly. I have one pre-ordered one here that's supposed to be available 9/1. They had the best price I could find.

Sounds like the unit for you is the Humminbird 899, but don't forget to upgrade transducer before using. Its a great unit and relatively easy to figure out. And lots of help on this site for humminbird and Lowrance. But I dont think you will get a Lowrance unit that has all 3 technologies mentioned above for your budget.

Humminbird also has the Helix 5' and 7's. I have heard people have complained about the screen sizes of the 5's, so definitely look at the 7's. They are coming out soon.
