My diesel put me down on the road today. 2008 chevy 2500 HD. Ran perfect all day. Got back in to crank and would not hit a lick. Did get it to cranj once and it idled just a minute. Nothing more. My son picked us up and brought us home. Checked my oil and water, belts, to be sure they wernt triggering an automatic shutdown. Got any simple things this non mechanic can try before I call in the calvry.

Being one of those common rail diesels boy I really can't say. Just in general I'd check codes, change fuel filters. On the easy side I'd think something to do with the def system. On the bad side fuel lift pump (very expensive) but that's just general stuff nothing real specific. The codes would give a better direction.
Sell it. Buy a gas burner. My last diesel nearly put me out of business I've got 3 F250's that are gas. Best move I've ever made.

On the good side it broke down off the road, parked by my camper. On the bad side I've got road side assistance when at least 100 miles away....I'm 85 miles.

Does it crank, but just not run? Could be water in fuel. Did you fill up recently? That happened to me once.

Sure hope you get it figured out. Sounds like it's not picking up fuel correctly to me to pound it and fire off?
Have you tried cranking it since it cooled off????? If it were a ford I would say cam sensor, still could be. good luck.
My ole diesel turned over 315K this morning and will still pull the house and when I filled up yesterday afternoon it had gotten 17.5 MPG, I love the diesel but I dog it niether!!
