They shrink on ice

I've seen where several of you have said to be sure your crappie are over 12", recommending not keeping any unless they are at least 12 !/4" due to shrinkage. I've always kept them if I could see anything over 12" but I've never re-measured them or been checked. I always have mine in the live well. I'm wondering if you're talking about fish put on ice or will all fish shrink?
They will shrink in the live well too due to stress but they shrink more on ice. Anything under 12.25" your gambling for a ticket.

Don't worry I'm working on the next big tool! A Mississippi Crappie Stretcher! Lol.
Biggest crappie to date is 3 lb 9 oz at grenada in 1988. Still hangs on my wall.
one fish.....cost my neighbor $240
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

I took my golden rule and cut a mark in it 1/4 in past the 12 in mark. If it don't go over that mark it goes back. Livewell or ice. My wife would kill me if I got one of those tickets![]()

Maybe that's why I can't catch that 16"er out of this Ohio river area. Catch a few 15-3/4's most years but that magic 16 continues to elude me. Always wait to measure any hogs till I get home. I might have actually caught one and didn't know it.![]()
