Default Fishing line damaged seals behind prop on Minnkota

I ordered a new seal kit for my Minnkota Maxxum trolling motor. It got some water in it and graphite from brushes needed cleaned out . Should I use an electrical contact cleaner or what on inside of motor to clean before reassembling ?

That is what I would use, check the can because some have a moisture dispersant and some don't.

I had flooded my minn kota once, (had it apart and was not careful in repositioning the BIG o-ring). Just took it apart sprayed with WD-40, let it sit a while and drained. Wiped oil off brushes and armature, reassembled and was good to go. Did not have any apparent problems after.

If the commutator is black, use some fine emery cloth to polish it. Just wrap some around it, grip it and spin it in your hand a couple times. It will come out bright and shiny like new. Then a little compressed air to remove the dust.

That was my next choice , the local big box stores had no contact cleaner .

I would do what Sovran suggested. WD-40 can damage the insulation on the windings and also the seals.

My Maxxum 70 has been eatin batteries lately so I knew from past experience there was water in it. Found braid wrapped behind the prop that cut the seal. Drive pin was lil bent to I used a hammer to persuade it out. Bent the shaft. Not good. Now I had to order new armature and seal/brush kit. Grrrrr. Took long bolts and water poured put. Greasy black sludge inside. Used some spray degreaser and a hose and it cleaned up nicely. $100 lesson learned

Brake clean is a good substitute for contact cleaner. Water dispersants are oil and you want the inside of an electric motor clean and dry. Remember the brush/commutator sparks and oil in that area glazes the commutator again.
