I have heard that motor guide has a much better spot lock or anchor mode than minn kota. Does anyone have the Xi5 and if so can you describe the difference. I was really disappointed with both my I-Pilots and the spot lock was one of the bigger reasons. Also have heard they are very quite in both prop and drive motors. This could be a real game changer for me but very expensive. My Terrova is a real brute and has worked well but has already had to be repaired for the dreaded brush squeak. They are noisy in my opinion. The few videos I have watched show very little but I do believe the MG is quite a bit faster side to side than the MK. Thanks for any response and opinions.
I can't speak about the xi5 but I have owned several other motorguides and they just couldnt hold up, I think they are quite motors but , mounts, form and function really lacked, not to mention once you bend a steel shaft and it will happen it just is never the same. I wish my terrova was quiter but that's my only qualm with it.
I have only owned cable drives in motor guides, but I do remember mounts and hardware being a weak link. I'm doing so much more still fishing these days and I hate to have to toss an anchor or two over the side every stop. Getting way to old for that action. Wonder if the "new" I-Pilot is any better than the older version?
I don't think any system is perfect but I know that ol mushroom anchor is a lot cheaper, ever think of just getting either a electric anchor or one with a manual crank.
I have never had a Min Kota, but I do have a Xi5 and love it. when your going along and want to stop and fish a spot, the anchor mode is really nice, and adjusts for wind and current. Love Mine!
Well today I talked my partner into letting me try His I-pilot on a few stationary targets. Put out marker buoys so I could watch the movement and paid attention to what the motor was doing. I'd say that 70% of the time it worked good enough to justify having one for the spot lock feature. His rig has a twenty pounder up front and a fifteen pounder on the rear both with heavy duty anchor pulpits and nice 3\4" anchor rope so he had never used the spot lock feature for this reason. That much steel can lock a boat down. Now I just need to figure out how to pay for the thing. I'm a little nervous putting 400 more bucks in a eight year old motor. Thanks for the feedback folks.
While the I-Pilot ain't perfect, once you learn how to park the boat with the wind, current and brush pile you'll be glad you bought it.
Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
Teach a man to fish, he'll sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
Most oustanding trolling motor I have ever owned, Minnkota Ulterra 36 volt, 112lb thrust. Handles the big skiff well. In and out of the water at the touch of a button.
