Oops, just noticed your marabou and I am probably the only one that ever says much about it, but there are better ways to tie that in too. First let me say to me it looks like the stem is still in that tail? I only use a marabou tip maybe 5 times in 100 and it has to be very thin and not noticeable. The best way to tie marabou is to tear the barbules off the stem, stack them until you have enough for the tail. Them pinch it together at about the spot you will cut to length, cut square and time in. Always only cut the part you tore off the stem and never the natural ends. The action is best when tied like that. It's a pain, but makes a great looking tail!

I always thought the hackle should be vertical also. So if I'm understanding correctly, you should tie it in like a beavers tail? I've always tied mine in the same position as the hook........vertically. Gonna have to try it and compare the different action.
Fishing is like pizza.......Even when it's not that good, it's still pretty good!

The only times I have tied a feather like your talking about is if I used 2 opposing feathers and that was mostly a special kind of feather and even with them I don't do that any longer. That would have been the Chucker Flank Barred feathers that I was doing that with. Here is what that bird looks like...

They are good looking jigs... and I appreciated the back and forth dialog toward improving / mastering your technique... I hope to start tying and this was incredibly helpful... Keep at it, man!!!
Great looking jigs
