Thread: fun day with wife on okeechobee rim canal

We're on vacation this week, so thought we'd try to sneak in a day trip to the Okeechobee canal. Pulled into the ramp at about 7:30am and headed for a hole we found last year . This year ..same spot..not a lily pad to be found!! Last year it was covered with them. We dropped hooks anyway in a spot where it dropped from 6 ft to 11 ft. Close to shore and around some branches that were hanging out in the water. We caught three big bluegills in that spot along with a few small tilapia and shellcrackers. We threw back the little ones. Bite quit there so we moved across the canal to a spot under a dock. WE caught three more big blues there and a 3 lb channel cat then drifted up to a spot about 1oo yds before the dock. We must have found them bedding there and caught five more big blues while missing another five or six at least. Wife started to snooze and lost three*l* About 11 it got too hot for her so we called it quits. WE used cane poles and crickets the whole time. I did stick a rod over the side in 14 ft water with a curly tail but nothing ever touched it. We were fishing on the northeast tip of the lake close to one of the locks. There were nice breezes and sun the whole time . Super relaxing and fighting a bluegill on a cane pole just can't be beat. They are all over the place with you!! Buying this little jon boat was one of the best things I've ever done.
