Default HB Trolling Motor TD Woes

Got a 346c DI for my kayak and have it rigged to use on the outboard boat trolling motor too. The transducer available for the 346c is the XTM 9 DI 25 T for the trolling motor which is a Minn Kota Edge. The problem is that the transducer is so big it hits the trolling motor mounting bracket when you pull it out of the water. A couple of months use and one of the ears that the hose clamp goes through broke off. Humminbird offered to swap it for a new one, but I contend that there is no way for this TD to work on the Minn Kota Edge.

The paper that comes with it says "the trolling motor mounted transducer will fit any standard trolling motor housing". I ask them to figure out how it would work and get back to me. There is no Transducer Shield that will fit it, and I'm asking them to swap it for a XNT 9 DI T which came with the 346c. It's for the transom but there is a shield made for that one although I'm not excited about paying $75 for that.

Maybe they consider the MK Edge to have a non-standard trolling motor housing

The fin on an Edge IS in the forward position, whereas many trolling motors have the fin towards the rear of the housing.

Could you not seat the Edge TM shaft to be "deeper" into the holding collar, so that the tdx would not come in contact with the bracket ??

Wouldn't that have the motor deeper in the water? I tried to put it at the depth mentioned in the instructions. Any deeper would just mean hitting more stumps and logs it would seem. Raising it up seems like it would help more if I could get away with it.

Yes, it would be deeper in the water ... but it would also be out in front of the bracket more, so there's less chance of contact with the bracket (if that is what has caused the breakage).

Your Edge has the fin "forward" of the tdx, so it would take the brunt of hits from underwater obstacles.

If your unit has a "keel offset" function, you can set it to reflect the true depth of the water, no matter how deep the tdx is in the water. (if that's a factor to you)

I needed to get some pictures anyway so thinks for the nudge: I put them on my own site so that I could control the display and put captions. They are here.

Geez. no wonder !! That is one big honkin transducer !!

Looks like you "may" have enough shaft length left to put the tdx out in front of the bracket tip, but only measuring or dropping the unit farther into the collar would tell.

If you still have enough upward ears of the tdx slots, you might be able to drill a small hole and run a metal rod or screw thru to hold your tdx ... but I don't know if that would solve the problem.

I just can't imagine why a 2d/DI unit needs such a big tdx block. But then I don't have a 2d/DI unit, just a straight DI unit on my trolling motor, and the tdx for it is the size of a fountain pen, and encased in a slotted cover/holder :

Well good news from Humminbird. I just sent my damaged one in and they are going to send me one that I can make work with a Transducer Shield. The DI part of that one didn't work from the get go. Just showed depth and nothing more. Looks like the time doing the pictures paid off.
