    Default Trolling cranks for crappie

I have been thinking about trying this out. After seeing this vid I think I am going to give it a try. What has been holding me back was thinking I had to troll faster than the speeds he suggests and I didnt want to run my motor to fish. Do any of you have any experience with this? Some of the questions I have: How many rods can you run, what kind of cranks, how much line out, are 10' rods OK, can you put some weight on and go slower? Thanks for your input. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViqXFyoDshg

I watched that when it was on TV. Barry catches some fish! I've trolled cranks for years but never seriously. Still do occasionally on a hot still summer day or when nothing else seems to work. Usually catch the bigger fish. Look at some of the posts from the SE states. They do some serious crankbait fishing and talk about rods, lures, speed etc. I think they even have some articles out from the Magnolia club. I ordered a couple of rigs to push cranks from one of them last year but have never even tried it yet. I've been successful at trolling motor speeds. It only takes about a half mile an hour to make most cranks work.

Back when the Kids and Grand kids went to the lake with me we did a lot of trolling for Sand bass with good luck. I had a friend that caught a lot of Crappie trolling along west bank at Cherokee Landing on Tenkiller. My boat motor ran me too fast for crappie. I hope to find crappie along creek channel next to flats this summer. Want to pull cranks with trolling motor and maybe push cranks with 3oz weights for the first time. Let me know how it works for you.

I am sure it has been asked before, but why push cranks instead of pulling?

Push cranks because trolling motor, rod holders, seat and fishfinder are up front. Can judge the depth of crank bait better. When you locate fish throw out a marker and get back to the fish quickly. Could switch to jigging if fish are schooled up maybe over brush.

My son, Montanaboy, fishes cranks, mostly at Mark Twain. He likes 1 mph to 1.5 mph. He gets good crappie, cats, all kinds of fish. You could pm him, and I'm sure he would be glad to help you. He went out today to fish cranks, but I haven't gotten a report yet.
