    Default Keeping fresh filets in frig


    How long can filets stay unfrozen in frig. They are prepared and in zip lock bags ready to add water to freeze. Was going to cook some tomorrow and was wondering if I can get by with out freezing first.

    My buddy has a compartment that is close to freezing. He can keep them for about a week. Put in a freezer bag with just a little water and they will stay firm for several day if cold enough.

    I leave them in the fridge for a couple of days and have never had an issue.

    Three days no longer before I freeze. Will keep longer packed in ice even in fridge. Thing to remember is if you freeze , time does'nt start over when you thaw so don't wait too long before freeze'n.

    I keep Saturdays fish in the refrigerator till Thursday all the time and have been doing it for years. I do keep them in ice water in the refrigerator. If I have not cooked by Thursday then I will freeze them.

    After I get my fish clean I keep them in ice water for a day or 2 max then I put in a stainless steel strainer to keep them dry they will keep several days, my personal opinion is water is the cause of early spoilage . With this process they are easy to vaccum seal.

    say i catch and clean some fish and immediately freeze them.....a couple weeks later thaw out to cook...how long will they last after being thawn out?

    I'd take them out 1-2 days before you want to eat them so they thaw slowly and are ready the day you want them.

    I also put a good teaspoon of salt in the water when I keep them in the fridge.

    I've kept them in the fridge for upto 3 days before freezing. However I do change the water daily. I freeze all mine in quart freezer bags with water and most of the air purged out. I have kept them in the freezer this way for upto a year. Still make great table fare when thawed and cooked.

    hysterical name...noticed 1st post. Welcome and agree with up to a year. I dry mine thoroughly a la ccollins above. Then vacuum seal for up to a year. Can't tell the diff from the ones you catch that day mixed with some that have been vacuum sealed this way for 9 mos to yr.
