I have a "Snakes of KY" poster in my shop and it is different coloration and pattern than what I see there. May be an Indiana snake?
If I was to guess I would say it's a rat snake or commonly called a chicken snake. From the size and head shape I would say that guess is as good as any. I hope you let it go on about its way. They are much more beneficial than harmful (unless you are a rodent or another snake). They kill and eat lots of poisonous snakes.

Rat snake....good one to have around. Unless it surprises me and makes me jump...then they end up like the copperheads, rattlers, and congos !!

How long is that snake?
It was about 4' long. mrducks, it's a KY snake over by Marvel Estates, and yes I left it alone, no reason to kill it unless its a danger. Thanks for the info guys.
Glad to help. I seem to have a different opinion about snakes than most. I tend to side-step them and leave them alone when out in nature like deer or turkey hunting. I've had huge water snakes and even cottonmouths near my boat and just make sure they go on about their business.
My studio is at pretty much ground zero as far as cottonmouths are concerned, right next to the Clarks River NWR. My dogs and I have come face-to-face with several over the years. I've been asked to get them out from under cars and even a coke machine of a neighboring business. I have caught several and took them some distance from my shop and released them. I don' want them close to my shop and would gladly kill one that was close and had a bad disposition. I don't find them to be the threat that some folks would have one to believe. I watch closely when going to my truck after dark or when digging in my driftwood pile.
This fellow was caught and moved away from my shop during flooding a few years ago. He was about 30 inches long but as big around as my arm. He never attempted to strike and his displaying was just to say "Leave me alone and all will be cool".

Wow, that thing is really kind of cool...but I'm scared of them. I'm amazed at how much fatter a poisonous snake gets than a non poisonous snake. Doug is correct, his shop is literally ground zero for the Kentucky Cottonmouth population because they aren't found past Madisonville/Henderson/Evansville. Big ole Timber Rattlers are down here too!
I'll take snakes over mice any day, I hate mice.
