A friend and I made a early morning outing Sat. seeking crappie and whatever else is biting. We meet at 7 am with 39 F air temp, almost no wind and with little boat loaded and take a southerly trip of a little over an hour. By the time we arrived we are the second boat to launch water temp is 54F stained but not high nor muddy. We catch some crappie mostly smaller fish and see some fish rolling and jumping. One I saw clearly was a huge gar the others may have been gizzard or hickory shad. Saw some bank fisherman and one released a striper in the mid 20 inch range. Fishing was dissapointingly slow so we decide to pull the boat and try another spot or two heading home.
Next stop the lily pads had choked up and several fishing already so moved on. Next spot caught 5 crappie keepers 10-12 inches and thick, all males. Decided to continue on and made one more stop at a shoreline location and caught and released 4 hickory shad on small jigs.
