Boat Set Adrift – On April 12, 2015 Senior Conservation Police Officer Hurst and Officer Boyette were patrolling the New River in Carroll County. While checking fishing licenses they noticed two individuals backing an old boat into a nearby landing. The boat was not registered and did not have any motor mounted. Officers noted that it seemed like a big boat for that area of the river, and continued down the river to a vantage point overlooking the river. The officers were observing several fishermen, when Senior Officer Hurst saw that the boat had been set adrift in the river. Several miles down the road officers were able to locate and stop the truck pulling the now empty boat trailer. Initially the men stated that they had left the boat tied up at the landing, but with further questioning the true story came out. The passenger admitted that the boat was his and he was abandoning it because it would cost more to fix than it was worth. The driver, the owner’s cousin, admitted to helping his cousin take the boat to the river and setting it adrift. Officers and the men went back to the landing where men were able to retrieve the boat from a shallow area where it had become stuck. With the boat loaded back on the trailer, the men started back to the owner’s house with officers following them. Soon the truck was forced to stop when one of the trailer’s wheels fell off, rolled over the bank and into the river. With one tire flat and the other now missing, the officers instructed the men to leave the boat on the side of the road and return to get it the next day. Both individuals were charged with littering/dumping in a public waterway, and the boat was removed the next day. Both men admitted to officers that they had made a dumb decision in abandoning the boat, and it seemed quite fitting that one man was wearing a tee-shirt that read, “Not even duct tape can fix stupid – it only muffles the sound.”
