I learned a lot about my Humminbird units from Dr. Jason Halfens youtube site, and Doug Vahrenburgs site. They have TONS of videos and articles that walk you through the operation of just about any function you can think of for HB units.

    Vahrenburg:

    https://www.youtube.com/user/imonbass

    Halfen:

Guided walleye and smallmouth bass fishing on Lake Wissota with Jason Halfen Outdoors

And forums like this one have lots of users that can help out too.

If I could make two suggestions they would be:

1 - learn as much as you can before you get on the water. TAKE NOTES and then take those notes with you on the boat.

2 - dedicate some time each trip JUST TO LEARNING THE SONAR. You will lose some fishing time early on, but it will pay huge dividends later on. I even went so far as to stay a few hours after sunset just to play with the sonar. There was nobody on the lake, and the sonar works in the dark just as well...so it was the perfect time to focus on images and what they were telling me.

Also...do some experimenting. If you see something down there, stop and try to catch it to see what it is. I've gone so far as to throw a cast net and drag stuff up to see what it is that I'm pinging. Good luck...and have fun.

I agree with the above suggestions. First thing to learn tho is how to restore it to factory default settings. Then as you learn take it out and play with it. If you mess up the programming too much you can always do a reset and start over.

You should get satisfactory results at factory defaults ...

Best thing to know up front: it ain't a TV. Anything in the middle of the screen is a long ways behind the boat, the only thing right under the boat is what's coming on the screen at that very moment.

There are training DVDs available if you're into that.
