Doodle Bug if you need to slow down more another trick is to tie a 5 gallon bucket on a rope and drag behind boat acts as a brake to slow you down.

I'm a Fl. homey trying to learn these Ga. waters. I've been to the Hill and gonna try to make it to Blackshear, Sinclair and Oconee soon.

If you know your lake and know where a sandy flat is located? Do you know that your heads all weight pretty close to the same? I make a med. cast out start your troll at .8 mph ease into the sandy flat watching your depth finder and see when you start bumping the bottom. write it down or make a mental note, That is the depth your jigs are running. I pour my own jigs and have weight them with a bullet grain scales. I know with in 3000th of a grain what mine weight. You would be very surprised that what the package says...really is not what they say they are. my 1/16 at .8 run about 9'.5 1/24 run around 5'.5 my 1/32 around 3'. bumping your speed up to 1.0 or 1.1 will really make a difference. also what type of line...this is important too. is it the same line on all your reels? 6lb test?

According to my GPS, I was trolling about 1 mph, and that was about as slow as I could go. I figured I needed to go slower so I just bumped the trolling motor on and off trying to slow down that way, and that is when I started getting hung up a lot. I started taking up some line and that helped, but I just wasn't sure how deep I was. I can see now that this is going to need a little experimenting, but that will require me to go more often. Least that's what I'm going to tell my wife.
Tell your wife you need a 'variable' speed trolling motor for Christmas. Then you won't need to "bump" on and off and learning curve will be shorter.
