Ok so i have too ask as to i have never seen people target crappie in a ditch. Is this an irrigation ditch? What does it run into a river? I am just curious as to what make the fish run it.
valid question....this particular ditch runs into a decent sized creek that then runs into the Arkansas river. the flood gate is in place to allow the farmer to trap water for use in irrigation on some surrounding cropland. the ditch itself is really a natural drainage or creek that has a water control structure in place. this time of year when there is water flowing down the creek it kicks in something in all those fish that are thinking about spawning to run upstream. if the same water situation was presented in August or January it wouldn't necessarily present the same opportunity but in many places around this state there are lot's of fish caught in the spring from similar scenarios due to the Spring rain runoff and the fish feeling frisky.
