well I finally got bit by the crappie bug!!! gonna try this spider rig thing
I have always loved saltwater fishing, both inshore and near/offshore, but with family and work getting the time to get enough trips to Florida gets harder and harder, and having my 22' bay boat sitting in the yard with all the electronics and I-Pilot trolling motor almost seems like a waste, so.... me and a friend decided to give this crappie/spider rigging thing a go, made a call to Grizzly Jigs and they set me up with 6 12' rod/reel combos that they thought would be god "starter" rigs.....then me and my friend spent an afternoon in his shop fabricating a rod holder base.....then a trip to academy to get the rod holders ......
Idecided to go with double rigs with 1/2 oz sinkers.....about half of them will be double minnow rigs and the other half I built with a minnow hook on top and a jig on bottom below the egg sinker....
not sure which lake to start with, Jackson is the closest to home (Griffin) but Oconee or Sinclair seem to be where the masses go and probably for a good reason.....
so any tips, tricks, lake preferences(with general area such as creeks would be greatly appreciated!!!)
dont laugh but here is what we came up with for our rod holder, held in place with the seat pedestal ....if we get into it and actually catch some fish, I'm sure I will upgrade to better rod holders, but he had most of the stuff laying around his shop....
The thing to do now is to get the boat and head out. Go to the closest lake to see how it works and to set it up the way you need. It sounds like you already have the other things that are needed in your boat. I think you will really enjoy this type of fishing. Whenever you do decide to upgrade or add rod holders, take a look at the Spyder Lok holders. As for lakes and hot spots to fish, just do a search on this website. There is plenty of info here.
Be blessed and enjoy!
...TIP IT WITH A MINNOW.
If you have never spider rigged before, I suggest looking at a couple of you tube videos. Especially the Ronnie Capps series. Him and Steve has it down. I prefer long lining till the summer, then its dock shooting time.
I've looked at every video that can be found on the subject.....to the point my wife has even said "enough with the research!!!!!".....just reaching out and trying to get actual opinions from the forum members now(all other forms of research have been completed)......
Pretty much decided that Sinclair is going to be my first target...and yes since this will be my 1st week at attempting this, the rain gods have declared an all out attack with extreme prejudice, with a willful attempt to keep me from my goal, but I am planning at being at a boat launch at Sinclair (any input would be appreciated) this coming friday.......I will be reading the forums all week to see if north or south (any input would be appreciated) will be my starting point....
for those that fish Sinclair, where is the best place to get minnows, I will be coming west from Griffin, so any input on bait stores would be greatly appreciated...
if I do make it over there, I will do a write up of how it turned out, including numbers of fish, and creeks fished, along with any water conditions that I can remember....hope to have a good report, but the old saying is...ANY DAY FISHING is better than.............
