The Coast guard sets the maximum horsepower by using different mathematical formulas (length x width) for different types of boats. The manufacturer can set a lower horsepower rating to satisfy the market. The RT188 could be rated for 150hp but would be to close to the cost of the glass boats Ranger sells. The Z118 glass boat is rated for 150hp for the same reason. It could be rated for 200hp like the Z518 which is the same hull only with more features. The lower rating keeps the cost down.

    Default Ranger aluminum

The Xpress 18' Hyper Lift boat is rated for a 150 (Scary Fast), and the 17'er is rated for a 115 (also a blur). The pad boat has a wider bottom, beam width, more flotation, and better handling.
