    Default Transducer Question

Hi everyone. I'm new to the board, but have snooped around for awhile and enjoy the content. I have what may be a silly question. I bought a trolling motor with a built in transducer. I am wondering if the depth shown on the screen is from the bottom of the transducer to the bottom of the lake, or are these things so high tech that they compensate for the depth of the trolling motor in the water.

For example, if the trolling motor sticks down in the water 2 feet, and the screen says the water is 6 feet deep, does that mean the water is actually 8 feet deep? Or does the transducer realize it is 2 feet deep and allow for that?

The trolling motor is a Minn Kota Terrova in case that matters.

    Thanks for any help!

The depth IS from the transducer to the bottom and back. It's called the ping. You can adjust the ping speed in the fish finder you have in its menu section. You can also adjust the keel offset so your depth reflects the actual depth of the water.

    Goocher,

Welcome! I'm going with the depth from the bottom of the transducer to the bottom of the lake. Logically the sonar unit has no idea how long the shaft is on your trolling motor unless you have an option to tell it that.

Say, hows the fishing in Arkansas? I've got folks in Mountain View and Batesville. Jerry A

Thanks for the help. I thought I was probably over thinking this.

Unfortunately I have no fishing report. The weather has been pretty tough, but we are planning a trip to SE Arkansas this weekend. The forecast ain't looking real great though.

If your trolling motor is 2' deep, set your keel offset to +2'.

Speak for yourself. Sum of us on here are both sofistikated and brilyant.

By the way, you are corrected in your above post. You can adjust the offset to get the actual depth, but I feel it is unsportsmanlike to actually know how deep the fish really are, so in the spirit of giving the fish and actual chance to not be caught, I don't mess with it.

    Welkum to the bord Goocher.
